Accolades continue for OHLOOK's masterclass at JTF

Students from OHLOOK Performing Arts won national awards and earned recognition at the 2018 Junior Theater Festival Atlanta, which happened January 12-14, 2018 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, GA. The Junior Theater Festival Atlanta united 6,000+ students and educators from 130 educational musical theater groups representing 30 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

OHLOOK Performing Arts won a Freddie G Outstanding Production, and performed, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat,” from Guys and Dolls JR. for all 6,000 Festival attendees at the Festival’s closing ceremonies. It was the second time at the 2018 Junior Theater Festival the students performed on the mainstage for all festivla attendees, as OHLOOK Performing Arts Center joined students from Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre from Fairhope, AL to perform “Give a Little Love” from Bugsy Malone JR. to legendary songwriter Paul Williams.

Also at the festival, OHLOOK Performing Arts Center’s Michael Mazey won a Freddie G award for Excellent Individual Performance by a Male.

The 36 OHLOOK Performing Arts students, ages 8-18, presented selections from Guys and Dolls JR. for Ernie Nolan, executive artistic director of Nashville Children’s Theatre, and Disney Theatrical Group teaching artist Lauren Chapman.

Said Nolan, “OHLOOK Performing Arts Center’s presentation was full of such memorable performances and fantastic musical numbers.” Added Chapman, “Each role was beautifully played as everyone came together to tell this story. The energy and enthusiasm was infectious.”

OHLOOK Performing Arts’ Andrew Smith, Will Thompson, Michael Mazey, Jackson Layton and Kale Thompson were 5 of 240 students who made it to the call-back for future Broadway Junior shoots for “how-to” choreography videos for soon-to-be released Broadway Junior musicals. The shoots will be taped in New York City this summer. The Broadway Junior scouts were on the lookout for outstanding students, out of 6,000 people at the festival, 805 were invited to audition for iTheatrics resident choreographer Steven G. Kennedy. The final cast will be determined later this year. These videos will be used in tens of thousands of schools across the country and internationally.

OHLOOK Performing Arts Carter’s Shamburger and Grace Lord were named to the Junior Theater Festival All-Stars, made up of outstanding performers attending the festival. The All-Stars performed a song during the closing ceremony for all 6,000 festival attendees.

OHLOOK masterclass wins big at Junior Theater Festival

Students and educators from OHLOOK Performing Arts Center won top awards at the 2016 Junior Theater Festival which happened January 15, 16 and 17 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, GA.

OHLOOK Performing Arts Center teacher Jill Lord was one of six teachers selected for the Freddie G Fellowship which recognizes the exceptional contributions to arts education. The teachers will receive all-expense paid trip to New York City, complete with professional development, Broadway performances and unforgettable celebrations. In addition to the New York experience, each of the teachers’ organizations receive $5,000 from Freddie and Myrna Gershon to enhance their arts program and further the collaborative and inclusive spirit of producing a musical. The Freddie G Fellowship is underwritten by Music Theatre International Chairman and Broadway Junior founder Freddie Gershon, and his wife, Myrna.

As one of just eight schools from across the country to win a Freddie G Outstanding Production Award, the OHLOOK Performing Arts Center students performed a song from their Xanadu JR. production for all 5,800+ attendees.

OHLOOK Performing Arts Center won a Freddie G Outstanding Production award, OHLOOK Performing Arts Center student Emma Lord received a Freddie G All Festival Performance by a Female Award, given to only one female at the festival, and OHLOOK Performing Arts student Matthew D. Vinson received a Freddie G Broadway Junior Slam Award. (The Broadway Junior Slam is a theatrical challenge in which students and teachers who don’t know each other must stage and perform a song from a musical in an hour.)

Said Rosemary Newcott, “This was an absolutely amazing performance. It was top notch in every way. Every single member of the ensemble at OHLOOK Performing Arts Center showed us a total understanding and committing to the style of the piece. There were excellent performances from all leads –with special note to female lead who also choreographed the entire production. I am amazed by her talent and credit the entire company for working together to create this work.”

OHLOOK performing Spring Awakening at AACTFest13

Spring Awakening Cast Wins AACTFest State and Regional Level

OHLOOK's production of Spring Awakening advanced from the State Level at the AACTFest13 and represented Texas at the Regional Competition April 18-21 in Lafayette, LA. Jill Lord was awarded Finest Lighting, Jack McCready won Excellence in Acting and John Davenport won Acting Achievement. At the State Level, the cast received awards for Outstanding Ensemble, All-Star Cast for John Davenport and Lacey Jane Dangerstone, Best Lighting Design and Best Director for Jill Blalock Lord and a special costume award for Hannah Blalock. The cast will be traveling to the National Competition in Carmel, Indiana June 17 - 23. Congratulations to all!

The OHLOOK Adult company for winning top International Honors!

OHLOOK's adult company traveled to Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada in May 2012 representing the United States at the Liverpool International Theatre Festival (LITF). The festival included theatre companies from around the globe; Egypt, Germany, Georgia, Wales, Slovakia, Poland, and more. OHLOOK's cast of Dog Sees God was invited to participate after winning the U.S. National Title of Best Overall Production in New York, last year. Jill Lord was selected as the Best Director and the entire cast was awarded Best Production. Cast members are: Lacey Jane Dangerstone (nominated for Best Actress), John Davenport, Matt Purvis (nominated for Best Supporting Actor), Jake McCready, Kristin Payne , Lorena Phillips (nominated for Best Supporting Actress), and Evan Spreen (nominated for Best Actor).

OHLOOK's Senior masterclass for bringing home award from 2012 festival

29 OHLOOK students, parents and teachers traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, in January 2012 to join over 3000 others including Broadway stars, writers and producers for the Junior Theater Festival. The 15 OHLOOK Masterclass students performed a synopsis of Seussical the Musical and were awarded Outstanding Achievement in Dance. Madi Bready and Colton Hess were selected for the All-Star Cast. Madi Bates, Emma Lord, Hannah Pierce and Andrew Smith were chosen to audition to perform in instructional choreography DVDs for Music Theatre International titles in development. Emma, Hannah and Andrew received callbacks and have advanced to the final selection stage.
